A playbook for navigating through the role of a scrum master.

  1. Get to know the teams (book sessions with engineering managers, product managers, and engineers)

  2. Understand the roadmap (prioritized features) for the release

  3. Send documentation on the release focus to all teams

  4. Ensure the product manager and engineering manager meet to groom and prioritise the product backlog, and understand what the team will be working on before the sprint planning meeting

    1. Stories are groomed - stories have a clear description, subtasks, acceptance criteria, owner and estimate

  5. During the sprint planning meeting,

    1. Product manager explains the features to be worked on with the team
    2. The team discusses the workflow
    3. The devs give estimation of assigned tasks

  6. Schedule sync for release planning with all teams

  7. Create a deck for facilitating the release planning session

  8. Estimate how long the release is going to take through Jira.

  9. Start observing the team’s scrum process and identify gaps by comparing it with the department’s scrum process. Make recommendations and share them with the team.

  10. Align with engineering managers and product managers on the team’s estimation process, facilitate the communication and adoption of this process across all teams.

    1. Create estimation documentation for the team
    2. Create a coaching deck on the estimation process
    3. Facilitate estimation sessions with the development teams

  11. User Adoption:

    1. Create and send out email campaigns on product launch to users
    2. Align with stakeholders responsible for tracking user adoption

  12. The bug/issue tracking process:

    1. All bugs are added to the backlog and categorize bugs/issues raised by users into priorities
    2. Product managers are responsible for selecting which bugs are to be added to each sprint base on their priority
    3. Engineers should have visibility/access to the details of each bugs/issues as raised by the user
